Powder coating is baked on at high temperature, so the finish resists chipping when you slide cargo across the cover or scrape ice off in winter.
The canister housing is welded aluminum rather than plastic, so it won’t crack if a load shifts forward during hard braking. We chose black textured powder coat as the standard finish because it hides road grime and matches most truck trim, though the coating is thick enough to sand and repaint if you ever want a custom color.

You release the cover by twisting the rotary latch near the tailgate, then the entire panel assembly rolls forward into the canister with one smooth pull. Automatic tension springs inside the canister keep even pressure across every slat, so the cover always retracts straight and never bunches to one side. When you roll it closed, the slats click into the rail channel and the latch re-engages automatically—no need to fiddle with separate straps or buckles.
Partial Opening for Tall Cargo
The X4S locks at any point along the rail, which means you can open just the rear third to load a toolbox or roll it halfway back to fit a dirt bike. The locking pins drop into pre-drilled holes every six inches, giving you flexibility without sacrificing security. If you haul a mix of long lumber and small gear, you can leave the front section closed and locked while the rear stays open.
Installation and Bed Compatibility
We ship every X4S with vehicle-specific clamps that attach to your bed rails without drilling holes in the sheet metal. The front canister mounts directly behind the cab, sitting low enough that most pickup rear windows offer full visibility. You’ll run two side rails down the length of the bed, snap the canister onto the front crossbar, and tighten the clamps with a socket wrench—total install time is typically thirty to forty-five minutes for a first-timer.
The cover fits most full-size and mid-size truck beds between five and eight feet long, and we offer dedicated kits for Ford, Chevrolet, Ram, Toyota, and Nissan models. If your truck has an existing bed liner or spray-in coating, the rail clamps adjust up to half an inch to accommodate the extra thickness. Yes. The rail clamps adjust up to half an inch to accommodate spray-in liners or drop-in bed mats. If your liner adds more than half an inch of height to the bed rails, you may need to use longer bolts or shim washers, which we can supply on request. Most factory and aftermarket liners fit without modification.
No. You need to drop the tailgate first to access the rotary latch and release the cover. Once unlocked, the slats roll forward into the canister. If you want bed access without opening the tailgate, consider a folding or retractable cover instead—rolling designs all require tailgate-down operation.
The front canister measures nine inches front-to-back, so when the X4S is fully retracted you lose about nine inches of usable bed length. The canister sits directly behind the cab, which means you still have the full width and most of the length available for cargo. If you regularly haul items longer than your bed, the canister won't interfere with the tailgate-down position.
It depends on the rack design. The X4S rail clamps occupy the top edge of your bed rails, so racks that also clamp to the rails may conflict. If your rack mounts to stake pockets or uses a different attachment point, you should be fine. We recommend checking clearance measurements before ordering, or contact us with your specific rack model and we can confirm compatibility.
We warranty the aluminum frame, slats, and canister housing against defects in materials and workmanship for as long as you own the cover. The warranty covers structural failures, weld cracks, and finish defects but excludes normal wear items like gaskets, tension springs, and latch components. If a slat bends due to a manufacturing flaw, we'll replace it. If it bends because you drove over it with a forklift, that's not covered.
Yes. The powder-coat finish can be lightly sanded and then painted with automotive-grade paint or wrapped with vinyl. Many customers who run show trucks or company fleet wraps have successfully color-matched the cover. Just clean the surface thoroughly and use a primer designed for powder-coated aluminum to ensure good adhesion.
Most tailgate extenders and flip-down steps are compatible as long as they don't interfere with the rear seal when the cover is closed. The X4S tail seal sits flat against the closed tailgate, so if your extender or step protrudes above the tailgate when stowed, it may prevent a complete seal. Test-fit before final installation, or send us photos of your setup and we can advise.
