BAK Tonneau Covers – Premium Truck Bed Protection

★★★★★4.8· thousands of reviews

The BAKFlip MX4 is our flagship aluminum hard-panel folding tonneau, designed for truck owners who need daily-use security without sacrificing full bed access. Four matte-finish panels fold completely open and rest against the cab, giving you 100% cargo space when you need it. The flush-mount latching system sits inside the bed rail so nothing protrudes above the truck's profile, and every hinge is sealed against dust and rain.

We built the MX4 for drivers who haul tools Monday through Friday and gear on weekends. The dual-action tailgate seal works whether your tailgate is up or down, and the entire cover installs without drilling—just clamp the rails and you're done. Each panel is powder-coated aluminum over a density-core insert, so it's light enough to operate one-handed but tough enough to handle snow load and highway wind.

Materials and construction approach

Every BAK tonneau starts with an aluminum frame—either extruded rails for the folding models or roll-formed slats for the Revolver line. We use powder-coat or FRP top skins depending on the series, but the core structure is always aluminum because it won’t rust and it keeps the overall weight manageable for one-person operation.

The MX4 and G2 use density-core inserts between the frame and top skin. That foam core adds rigidity without bulk, so each panel can support distributed snow load or light cargo pressure without flexing. On the Revolver X4s, we laminate rubber seals between each slat—those seals compress when the cover is closed, forming a continuous weather barrier along the entire bed length. All hinge points and latch mechanisms are stainless steel or zinc-coated to survive salt spray and moisture.

Installation and bed compatibility

Clamp-on rail system

Our clamp-on design fits factory stake pockets and bed rails without drilling. You position the side rails, hand-tighten the clamps, then check alignment before final torque. The MX4 and G2 take about 30 minutes start to finish; the Revolver X4s adds 15 minutes because you’re mounting the canister assembly. We include a printed instruction sheet and every fastener you need—no separate hardware-store trip.

Bed liner compatibility

BAK covers work with spray-in liners, drop-in liners, and bare bed surfaces. If you have a spray-in liner, the clamps sit on top of the texture—just verify the liner doesn’t extend past the bed rail lip. Drop-in liners sometimes need spacer shims (included in the hardware kit) to account for sidewall thickness. Measure your bed length corner-to-corner before ordering; we offer 5.5′, 6.5′, and 8′ versions, and each is specific to bed size and truck model year.

Styling

Weather sealing and drainage

Each cover ships with a full seal kit: a rubber bulb seal for the cab end, EPDM gaskets along the side rails, and a dual-action tailgate seal. The cab seal compresses against the back window when the first panel closes, blocking wind-driven rain. Side-rail gaskets run the length of each clamp rail, creating a channel that drains water toward the tailgate.

The dual-action tailgate seal is a molded rubber piece that seals whether your tailgate is latched or dropped. When the tailgate is up, the seal compresses against the tailgate’s top edge; when it’s down, the seal rests against the bed floor. On the Revolver X4s, inter-slat seals handle the horizontal plane—each slat overlaps the next, and the rubber strip between them sheds water toward the sides. We don’t claim 100% waterproof (no tonneau is), but our covers keep 95%+ of rain and snow out of the bed during normal driving and parked conditions.

MX4 survived two winters without any issues
I've had the MX4 on my F-150 for two years now, through Michigan winters and summer road trips. Zero rust, zero leaks, and the panels still fold as smoothly as day one. Installation took me about 25 minutes by myself—no drilling, just clamp and go. Best part is being able to flip it all the way open when I pick up plywood or longer cargo.

Revolver X4s is perfect for tight garage parking
My garage has maybe six inches of clearance when I pull in, so a folding cover that sticks up wasn't an option. The Revolver rolls completely into the canister and stays flush—I can park, close the door, and still walk past the truck. One-hand operation is clutch when I'm carrying tools. Worth every penny.

G2 handles daily contractor abuse like a champ
I run a small electrical business, so my tonneau sees tie-downs, toolboxes, and the occasional accidental screwdriver drop. The G2's textured finish hides all the wear, and the panels are still rigid after 18 months of constant use. Install was straightforward—I did it in my driveway with basic hand tools.

Great build quality, just confirm your bed length first
The MX4 is solid—aluminum feels premium, seals work great, and I love that it folds completely open. Only hiccup was I initially ordered the wrong bed length (my fault, not theirs). Once I swapped for the correct 6.5' version, it fit perfectly. Double-check your truck's specs before you order.

Revolver slats roll smoother than I expected
I was worried the rolling mechanism would feel janky or get stuck, but it's honestly smoother than my garage door. The slam latches lock in tight, and the whole thing retracts in about three seconds. I use it every day, and it still operates like new after a year.

Best upgrade I've made to my truck
I went with the MX4 after researching for weeks, and it's exactly what I needed. Keeps my gear dry, looks clean, and I can still haul full sheets of drywall when the panels are folded. Installation was easy enough that I didn't need to watch a video—just follow the printed instructions.

Good to know

Common questions about BAK tonneau installation and compatibility

You can install any BAK tonneau by yourself in 30–45 minutes. The folding models (MX4, G2) are lighter and take about 30 minutes; the Revolver X4s adds 15 minutes because you're mounting the canister assembly. All models use a clamp-on system—no drilling required. You'll need a socket wrench and a tape measure to check alignment. A second person can help hold the rails steady during initial placement, but it's not required.

Yes. BAK covers are compatible with spray-in liners, drop-in liners, and bare truck beds. Spray-in liners work directly—the clamps sit on top of the textured surface. Drop-in liners may need spacer shims (included in the hardware kit) to account for sidewall thickness. Measure your bed corner-to-corner before ordering, and confirm the liner doesn't extend past the bed rail lip.

BAK folding covers (MX4, G2, F1) support up to 400 pounds of evenly distributed weight—enough for snow accumulation or light cargo like toolboxes. The Revolver X4s slats support light foot traffic for side access but are not designed for standing loads. Do not walk or kneel directly on any tonneau panel, and avoid placing point loads (single heavy objects) in one spot.

No tonneau cover is 100% waterproof, but BAK covers block 95%+ of rain and snow during normal driving and parked conditions. Each cover includes a full seal kit—cab seal, side-rail gaskets, and dual-action tailgate seal. The Revolver X4s uses inter-slat rubber seals to shed water toward the bed sides. You may see light moisture along the seal edges during heavy storms, but the bed interior stays dry for everyday use.

No. The BAKFlip MX4 and G2 fold completely open—all four panels rest against the cab, giving you 100% bed access without removing anything. The Revolver X4s retracts into a canister behind the cab, leaving 90% of the bed open. Both systems let you haul full-length cargo like lumber or ladders without uninstalling the cover.

Yes, when paired with your truck's tailgate lock. BAK covers have a rear latch that auto-engages at the tailgate—once the tailgate is locked, the cover cannot be opened from outside. The MX4 and G2 also have rotary latches at each panel that you can padlock for added security. The Revolver X4s uses slam latches that lock at multiple positions; you secure it by locking the tailgate.

Wash your BAK tonneau with car soap and a soft sponge, just like washing your truck. Avoid pressure washers aimed at seals or hinges. Apply silicone spray to hinge pivot points and latch mechanisms every six months, and wipe off excess to prevent dust buildup. Check clamp torque annually—road vibration can loosen fasteners. Rubber seals last 5–7 years; replacement seal kits are available if you need to refresh them.
